Recently while reviewing a web site for an Iowa based food company I noticed a banner at the bottom of the page.  I have seen this banner before.  It advertises the hosting/design company and a cumulative site of their clients.  In that one banner there were a total of five links to that company and it’s affiliate.

Now let’s think about this.  Five links.  The site I was on only had eight pages.  Using keywords used on the food company’s site (granted searches are not all based on keywords) there was only one hit in the first two pages of Google out of 606,640,000.  The terms were so vague it would be be very difficult to get above companies like FoodTV for example.
The funny thing is the links take you to a page on that company’s site that says a website is no good if people can’t find you.  I wonder who they are trying to get found.  Obviously not the company who paid thousands for the site.  The truth is without paying out money for adwords, having your link on several popular sites, along with good copy in your text it is very hard to be ranked high unless someone searches for you on your company name.  A generic keyword just isn’t going to get it done anymore.

At Net Image Group we discuss this with the customer and only put the link on their site if it does not take away from the look of their site.  We would rather concentrate on the customer and not shameless self promotion.  I don’t have a problem with links by designers on a site.  I have a problem with the purpose behind the way it can be abused.
